Walk in shower prices vary far more than suite prices because the build method changes underneath the finish. Two showers that look identical can be two thousand pounds apart depending on whether the floor was tiled and tanked or a tray was dropped in.
Option one, tray and glass panel
Typically £2,800 to £4,800 fitted where a bath is being removed and the waste stays close to its existing position.
- Low profile stone resin tray, usually 1200mm by 800mm or 1400mm by 800mm.
- Fixed 8mm or 10mm glass panel, with a return panel where splash needs controlling.
- Full height tiling to the wet walls, splash height elsewhere.
- Thermostatic valve, riser or fixed head, and a new waste run.
Option two, low threshold former with tiled floor
Typically £4,000 to £6,500. A shower former is set into or on top of the floor and tiled over, leaving a shallow upstand rather than a tray lip.
- Tanking to the floor and lower walls before tiling.
- Falls formed in the board so water reaches the drain without ponding.
- Better for anyone with limited step height, and it looks continuous.
Option three, full level access wet area
Typically £5,500 to £8,000 in a standard room, more where joists have to be altered or the floor is solid concrete.
- Zero threshold, so a wheelchair, walking frame or shower chair rolls straight in.
- Linear drain or centre gully, tanked membrane across the whole wet zone.
- Often paired with grab rails, a fold down seat and a slip resistant floor tile.
What pushes the price up
- Moving the waste more than a metre from its current point.
- Solid concrete floors, which have to be chased or built over.
- Large format porcelain, which needs a flatter substrate and slower setting out.
- Electrics, such as a new shower circuit, downlights or a heated mirror.
- Making good beyond the bathroom, for example a ceiling below that needs patching.
What keeps it sensible
- Keep the shower where the bath was so the waste run is short.
- Tile full height in the wet zone and half height elsewhere.
- Choose one statement material rather than three.
- Decide the specification before we start, since changes mid job cost more than the same choice made on day one.

Why is level access more expensive than a tray?
The floor has to be dropped or built up to create the fall, the area is tanked, and the drainage is set before tiling. That is extra days of skilled work rather than extra materials.
Can a walk in shower go on a timber floor upstairs?
Yes. We either recess the former between the joists where the joist run allows, or build a low profile deck with a linear drain. We check the joists at survey before promising either.
Do I need a pump?
Only if the flow is poor. We test pressure and flow at the survey. On mains pressure combi systems in most local housing a good thermostatic valve is enough.
How long does it take to fit?
A tray and screen swap is normally 4 to 6 working days including tiling and making good. A tiled level access shower area is usually 7 to 10 working days.
