A grab rail is only as good as what sits behind the tile. Most of the failed rails we are called out to were fixed into plasterboard with plastic plugs, and they pulled out the first time someone genuinely needed them.
What a safe fixing looks like
- Timber noggin or stud behind the board, or a full plywood backing panel across the likely rail zone.
- Fixings into masonry with resin or sleeve anchors where the wall is solid.
- No fixing relying on tile adhesive or a hollow board alone.
- Drilling through tile with the correct bit so the glaze does not spall and let water behind.
- Silicone at every penetration, so the fixing point stays dry for good.
Rail types and where each earns its place
- Vertical rail at the shower entry. Best for pulling up and steadying on the step in.
- Horizontal rail along the shower wall. Support while standing and washing.
- Angled rail beside the toilet. Gives both a pull point and a push point during the stand.
- Drop down rail. Where space either side of the pan is tight and a fixed rail would block access.
- Rail with integrated shower riser. Keeps the wall clear and reduces clutter.
Getting to a genuinely level threshold
- Recess a shower former between the joists on a timber floor, so the tiled surface stays flush.
- Cut or build up a solid floor, then form falls to a linear drain at the wall.
- Tank the whole wet zone and water test before tiling.
- Use a shallow ramp only where the structure genuinely does not allow a flush finish, and keep the gradient gentle.

Common questions
Can a grab rail be fitted to a tiled plasterboard wall?
Not safely on plugs alone. A rail has to reach timber noggins, a stud, masonry or a reinforced backing board. Where none exists we open the wall, add the backing and make good, which is why doing it during a refit is far cheaper.
Where should rails actually go?
At the shower entry, alongside the shower controls, beside the toilet on the person's stronger side, and near the basin where standing is unsteady. We mark positions with the user present rather than guessing.
What height are rails fitted at?
Typically 700mm to 900mm from the floor for horizontal rails, adjusted to the individual. A vertical rail at the shower entry suits people who pull up rather than push down.
How much does it cost?
As part of a bathroom fit, rails and backing are a modest line item, usually £60 to £160 per rail installed. As a standalone visit we price the job rather than the rail, because the wall build up decides the work.
What counts as level access?
A threshold you can roll or shuffle over without lifting a foot, achieved either with a fully tanked wet floor or a former tiled flush into the floor. A 40mm tray lip is low access, not level access.
