Bathroom Lighting Guide

Zones, ratings, spacing and layering, explained without the jargon.

Lighting is decided in an hour and lived with for fifteen years. Most bathrooms in older Stoke housing still have a single pendant or one central downlight, which throws hard shadows exactly where you need to see. Getting it right costs very little extra during a refit because the ceiling is already open.

Zones and IP ratings, the safety part

The wiring regulations divide a bathroom into zones based on distance from water.

  • Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself. Only low voltage IPX7 fittings belong there.
  • Zone 1 is above the bath or inside the shower up to 2.25 metres. IP65 fittings, and any socket outlet is prohibited.
  • Zone 2 extends 600mm beyond zone 1 and around the basin. IP44 as a minimum.
  • Outside zones ordinary fittings are permitted, though IP44 throughout is a sensible standard given the humidity.

All bathroom circuits need RCD protection, and switching inside the room must be a pull cord. These are not optional details, and they are the first things any electrical certificate records.

Layer one, general lighting

Spread low glare LED downlights evenly across the ceiling rather than grouping them centrally. Keep them roughly 300mm off the walls so they wash the surfaces rather than the middle of the floor. In a small room four fittings is usually right; in a larger family bathroom six. Choose a fitting with a recessed lamp and a baffled trim, because a flush glaring lamp is unpleasant when you are lying in the bath looking at the ceiling.

Layer two, task lighting at the mirror

This is the layer people miss. A ceiling light behind you casts your own shadow onto your face, which is why bathroom mirrors so often feel dim. Light needs to come from in front, at roughly face height. The neatest solution is an illuminated LED mirror or mirrored cabinet with edge lighting and a demister pad. The alternative is a pair of IP44 wall lights either side of the mirror at around 1.6 metres, which gives beautifully even light with no shadow.

Layer three, accent and low level

Optional but effective. A concealed LED strip under a floating vanity, a small light inside a shower niche, or plinth lighting that doubles as a night light. Keep accent lighting on a separate switch so it can be used alone late at night without the full ceiling array coming on.

Colour temperature and quality

Stick to 3000K warm white for the general layer. 2700K can feel yellow against white sanitaryware, and 5000K or above feels like a clinic. At the mirror, 3000K to 4000K works best. Look for a colour rendering index of 90 or above; a low CRI lamp makes skin tones and make up colours read incorrectly, which is the whole reason the mirror light exists.

Dimming and control

Dimmable general lighting is worth the small extra cost, especially in an en suite where someone gets up before the household. Use dimmable LED lamps with a trailing edge dimmer, and match the driver to the dimmer or you will get flicker and buzz. A separate circuit for the mirror light is more useful than dimming the mirror itself.

Planning it on paper before first fix

  1. Draw the room with the bath, shower, basin and toilet in place.
  2. Mark the zones so you know which fittings must be IP65.
  3. Place the mirror light first, since its position is fixed by the basin.
  4. Space the general lights around it, avoiding a light directly over the mirror.
  5. Decide switching groups, then confirm cable routes before ceilings are boarded.

Common mistakes

One central light and nothing else. Cold blue lamps chosen because they looked bright in the shop. A downlight positioned directly above where you stand at the basin. Non dimmable fittings in an en suite. Fittings with an inaccessible integrated LED, which means replacing the whole unit when it eventually fails.

Common questions

What IP rating do bathroom lights need?

IP65 inside a shower or above a bath, IP44 as a minimum elsewhere in the room where splashing is possible. Outside those zones an ordinary fitting is permitted but IP44 is still the sensible default.

How many downlights does a bathroom need?

Roughly one per square metre of ceiling as a starting point, spread evenly rather than clustered in the middle. A 2.2m by 1.8m bathroom typically takes four.

What colour temperature is best?

3000K warm white for the main lighting. It flatters the room and feels right at both ends of the day. 4000K is acceptable at the mirror where you need accuracy.

Can I have a switch inside the bathroom?

Only a pull cord, unless the switch is outside the door. That is a wiring regulations requirement, not a preference.

Are illuminated mirrors worth it?

Yes. A mirror with even light at face height is far better for shaving and make up than any ceiling light, and demisting pads are genuinely useful.
